A localized ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia has been put into place in advance of a humanitarian mission that was arranged with the help of US First Lady Melania Trump. The localized halt in hostilities began at 3 a.m., and its purpose is to make it possible for an aid mission to reach the town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, which is under Russian occupation, later this week. Melania Trump, as stated by her office, took charge of discussions with civilian negotiators representing both Russia and Ukraine, and this followed a meeting with United Nations officials who had provided her with a briefing on the circumstances in the town. The humanitarian aid mission is being arranged in advance of a fresh round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which are set to be brokered by the United States and are anticipated next month, with the goal of bringing an end to the war that has now lasted for more than four and a half years.

As many as 2,000 people are trapped in Oleshky, where supplies of food and medicine are running increasingly low. According to the United Nations, they cannot get out of the area because of explosive mines and drone attacks. Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine, along with the armed forces of both countries, each confirmed in separate statements that the ceasefire had taken effect. The local ceasefire is expected to remain in place until at least Saturday, and possibly longer, although deep-seated mistrust between Russia and Ukraine has caused earlier attempts at ceasefires to fail. Oleshky lies within the partially occupied Kherson region, roughly 550 kilometers to the southeast of Kyiv, at a point where the Dnipro River forms the dividing line between Russian and Ukrainian forces. On the very first day of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the town was captured by Russian forces.

An even greater disaster befell the town in June 2023, when the collapse of a dam caused floodwaters to sweep through and inundate it. Situated directly across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson, which serves as the administrative capital of the region, is the town of Oleshky. During the early phases of the 2022 invasion, Russian forces took control of Kherson, but a few months afterwards they withdrew to the other side of the river. Negotiators involved in the aid mission said doctors, medicines, food supplies and water would be taken to Oleshky before evacuation corridors are opened.
