Massive protests have erupted across Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK), with locals demanding freedom from Pakistan and protesting against the military establishment. The unrest escalated following a scheduled march on June 9 by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee to demand local rights, resources, and the implementation of the Muzaffarabad Agreement, which promised subsidies on wheat, electricity, education, and healthcare. The situation turned violent during the funeral of Shahzeb Habib, a protester allegedly killed earlier by Pakistan Rangers.
Reports indicate that Pakistan forces opened fire on mourners and protesters, resulting in 27 deaths and 200 injuries, alongside mass arrests. The epicenter of the unrest is Muzaffarabad, with protests also reported in Gilgit-Baltistan and Rawalkot, where a region-wide shutdown was enforced. The anger stems from economic hardships, the ban on the Awami Action Committee, and opposition to allocating assembly seats to Kashmiri refugees in Pakistan. The anti-Pakistan sentiment has also spilled over internationally, with large protests taking place in London against the military and Asim Munir.
