China, Alibaba condemn the move as discriminatory and baseless. Besides BYD, other additions to the list include RoboSense Technology, an AI and robotics company with headquarters in Shenzhen, and Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics. (Image: Reuters) Pentagon has blacklisted several major Chinese companies, including technology company Alibaba to its list of Chinese military companies. This will prevent these companies to receive any US defence contracts in future. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Defence Department, an update has been made to the names of “Chinese military companies" operating directly or indirectly in the United States in accordance with the statutory requirement of Section 1260H of the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021.
The Chinese companies named in the latest list include electric vehicle giant BYD, technology company Alibaba and search engine Baidu. “Alibaba is a military-civil fusion contributor to the Chinese defense industrial base because it is affiliated with MIIT," it stated. Other additions to the list include RoboSense Technology, an AI and robotics company with headquarters in Shenzhen, and Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics. Pentagon stated that these companies have been designated as “Chinese military companies" as they are engaged in providing commercial services, manufacturing, producing, or exporting and operate directly or indirectly in the United States but are either owned or controlled by the Chinese military, or that contribute to China’s “military civil fusion". With the latest addition, the Pentagon’s list of “Chinese military companies," which is updated every year, now has 188 companies.
Last year, the number stood at 134. Following the announcement of the list, China’s embassy in Washington, DC, called the listing as “discriminatory". “Chinese companies that do business overseas have been strictly observing laws and regulations of their host countries," Al Jazeera quoted an embassy spokesperson. “The US should stop its wrong practice and create a fair, just and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese companies." Alibaba, China’s largest e-commerce company, has also condemned Pentagon’s statement, saying there was “no basis" for its inclusion on the blacklist. “Alibaba is not a Chinese military company nor part of any military-civil fusion strategy," a company spokesperson said. “We will take all available legal action against attempts to misrepresent our company."
