(Source: Sansad TV/YouTube) After quitting the Trinamool Congress Party, which is facing its worst political turmoil in history, former TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray on Monday claimed that he would have been murdered by contract killers if he had quit when the country was gripped by outrage over the RG Kar rape case. Ray called the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC a “party of thieves, rapists" and made the shocking claim that he could have been “murdered by contract killers" if he had resigned during the RG Kar hospital row. The leader made the remarks at a time when the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which had ruled West Bengal for 15 years, is facing a massive rebellion within the party both in the assembly and Parliament after a crushing electoral defeat.
Speaking to news agency PTI, Ray claimed, “A party of thieves, rapists… RG Kar incident helped me make up my mind. Had I quit then, could have been murdered by contract killers." I had never seen anything like this in my political career, and I spoke up about it. I said that everyone involved should be hanged, I also put out a tweet and sat on a protest… I was summoned for my tweet," he added, while recalling the RG Kar episode. Trinamool Congress Faces Biggest Parliamentary Crisis The Trinamool Congress appeared to be facing its biggest parliamentary crisis yet, with a group of MPs claiming majority support deciding to back the BJP-led NDA after an earlier split within its legislative ranks.
The development came on a day when TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, attended the INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi. Leading the rebel camp, Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said the dissident MPs had decided to write to Speaker Om Birla declaring their support for the NDA. The latest turmoil comes just days after the TMC leadership faced a major setback in the West Bengal Assembly, where 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs defied the high command by rejecting its choice of veteran leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition and instead elected expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee to the post.
