The strategic Zojila Tunnel project has achieved a major milestone with its final rock wall breached. Built at an altitude of over 11,500 feet and stretching over 13 kilometres, it will become the world's longest bi-directional single-tube road tunnel. The project aims to provide permanent all-weather road connectivity to Ladakh, which is cut off from the rest of the country every winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.
Despite facing subzero temperatures, unstable geology, and avalanches, construction has progressed. The construction agency estimates it will take another two years to complete and dedicate the tunnel. The project is expected to boost tourism, trade, and military mobility along India's northern frontiers.
