'BJP Is Mistaken': Digvijaya Singh's Big Remark As Congress Considers Shifting MLAs From MP Published By, Last Updated: June 09, 2026, 12:51 IST Singh's remarks came as the Congress is reportedly considering moving its Madhya Pradesh MLAs to Karnataka to prevent cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. Rapid Read Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijaya Singh (PTI/File) As Congress is considering shifting its MLAs from Madhya Pradesh amid fears of cross-voting in the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections, former MP Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh attempted to project a sense of unity among the leaders. The strategy is believed to stem from the BJP’s decision to field a third Rajya Sabha candidate, Mahesh Kewat, chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Fishermen Welfare Board. Kewat entered the contest on the final day of nominations after three days of deliberations, turning the third seat into a direct contest.
Speaking to CNN-News18 in Bhopal, Digvijaya Singh dismissed speculation surrounding the party’s MLAs in Madhya Pradesh, asserting that the BJP was “seriously mistaken" if it believed there were divisions within the Congress legislature party. Singh also said all Congress MLAs remained united and that he was in constant touch with them. What Is Congress’s Plan? The Congress is considering moving its Madhya Pradesh MLAs to Karnataka in a bid to keep the party’s flock together amid concerns of possible cross-voting in the election for three Rajya Sabha seats from the state, according to reports. According to news agency PTI, the proposal was discussed during a late-night meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) at the residence of Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar. Around 60 MLAs attended the meeting. The MLAs could leave the state as early as Tuesday if the proposal receives the approval of the Congress high command, as per the report.
The Congress had nominated former MP Meenakshi Natarajan and had initially appeared comfortably placed to secure one of the three seats in Madhya Pradesh. However, Kewat’s last-minute entry added a new dimension to the contest and intensified concerns over possible defections or cross-voting. The Congress currently has 64 MLAs in the 230-member MP assembly, with one legislator ineligible to vote after a Supreme Court verdict. To win the third seat, the BJP needs eight more votes to reach the required number of 58, even if it gets the votes of Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) leader Kamlesh Dodiyar and Sagar MLA Nirmala Sapre, who joined the BJP in 2024.
