A Facebook comment allegedly containing a death threat and casteist abuse against Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has led to the arrest of a 48-year-old man in the state's Udupi district, police said on Sunday. The accused, identified as a resident of Kervashe village near Karkala, was taken into custody by Karkala Town Police and later produced before the jurisdictional magistrate. Read Full Story According to police, the case stems from a comment posted on a Facebook page named "NAMMA KARLA", which carried a photograph of the minister.
The comment allegedly included abusive language, casteist remarks and a threat directed at Kharge. FACEBOOK POST SPARKED COMPLAINT Police said the matter came to light after a resident of Nitte village noticed the post on June 7 and lodged a complaint. According to the complaint, the accused had posted the comment on June 6. The remark allegedly read, "Who are you bastard? Time to finish you", along with other derogatory and caste-related comments targeting the minister. Investigators believe the content was intended to spread hostility between communities and contained elements of criminal intimidation.
SERIOUS CHARGES INVOKED Following the complaint, Karkala Town Police registered a case under Sections 351(3) relating to criminal intimidation, 353(2) concerning statements conducive to public mischief and 196 dealing with promoting enmity between groups on religious grounds under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police also invoked Section 33(1)(R)(U) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in connection with the alleged casteist remarks. ACCUSED PRODUCED BEFORE COURT The accused was arrested on Sunday and produced before the local court after being taken into custody.
Police said further investigation is underway into the social media post and the circumstances surrounding its publication. The arrest comes amid increasing scrutiny of abusive and threatening content on social media platforms, particularly posts targeting public representatives and carrying allegations of hate speech or caste-based abuse.
