The central government has cleared a thirteen thousand crore rupee greenfield civil-military airport project in Great Nicobar, dropping the expansion plans for the existing naval air station. The naval runway will remain at its current length of four thousand five hundred feet, as extending it was deemed impractical due to topographical, navigational, and ecological constraints. The new dual-use facility aims to serve both civilian and military needs, enhancing maritime surveillance and reducing reliance on foreign ports.
The broader eighty-one thousand crore rupee infrastructure initiative has sparked a political dispute. The political opposition has raised concerns regarding potential ecological damage and the impact on tribal communities, suggesting the project serves corporate interests. In response, the government maintains that the initiative is a strategic national requirement and has received all necessary environmental clearances. Officials state that only a minor fraction of the island will be utilized, ensuring the protection of the local ecology and tribal populations while generating significant employment opportunities.
