An Early, Unrelenting Summer Temperatures at Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather station, climbed to 45.1°C — 4.7 notches above normal — marking the capital’s first heatwave day of May 2026. This summer is rewriting Delhi’s electricity calendar: for the first time ever, the city crossed the 7,000 MW mark in April itself, hitting 7,078 MW on April 27 — something that previously happened only in May. Historically, the 8,000 MW threshold was a June phenomenon. Record That Keeps Breaking Itself Till May 20, Delhi recorded a peak of 8,039 MW, compared to 7,533 MW during the same period in 2025 and 7,591 MW in 2024. Between May 1 and May 20, demand in 2026 was higher than the corresponding day of 2025 on 15 out of 20 days.
What’s Driving The Surge The primary driver is intense heat, with households and businesses leaning heavily on air conditioners, coolers, and refrigeration. Around 2,670 MW of green power — including 840 MW solar, 572 MW hydro, and 500 MW wind — is being deployed this summer to ease pressure on conventional sources. Brace For More The IMD has put Delhi on orange alert through May 25, flagging the likelihood of severe heatwave conditions in the days ahead. SLDC projections warn peak demand could cross 9,000 MW this summer — higher than the all-time record of 8,656 MW recorded in 2025. Delhi’s grid, and its residents, have a long summer ahead.
