Live now Last Updated: May 21, 2026, 10:35 IST Delhi Transport Strike, Auto And Cab Protest Live: A three-day transport strike called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) began across Delhi-NCR on Wednesday, with truckers, private bus operators, taxi unions and commercial vehicle associations protesting against the Delhi government’s hike in environment compensation cess and the proposed ban on BS-IV commercial vehicles. The AIMTC, which claims support from more than 68 transport unions and associations in the region, said transport operations would remain suspended from May 21 to May 23.
The protest is expected to affect the movement of goods and commercial transport services across the national capital region. Meanwhile, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said discussions are ongoing with the Delhi government to address the concerns of transport operators. Gadkari stated that he had spoken with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and expressed hope that the matter would be resolved soon. The transporters’ body has accused the Delhi government, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and court-led directives of imposing policies that are financially burdensome and detrimental to the transport sector.
According to the union, the recent increase in environment compensation cess has sharply raised operational costs for commercial vehicle owners entering Delhi. AIMTC leaders have demanded immediate withdrawal of the enhanced cess imposed on Delhi-bound goods vehicles. They argued that the levy should only apply to transit vehicles using Delhi as a passage corridor and not to transporters delivering goods within the city. The association has also strongly opposed the Delhi government’s decision to prohibit the entry of non-Delhi registered BS-IV commercial goods vehicles from November 1, 2026.
The restriction, announced as part of the capital’s pollution-control strategy, exempts electric, CNG-powered and BS-VI compliant vehicles.
