After Schools, Bengal Makes Vande Mataram Mandatory In All Madarsas Published By, Last Updated: May 21, 2026, 09:55 IST West Bengal government orders all madarsas under West Bengal Madrasah Education Board to make Vande Mataram compulsory. The new order brings madarsas under the same rule that had earlier been introduced for schools across the state. Officials said all recognised madarsas functioning under the West Bengal Madrasah Education Board will now have to ensure that Vande Mataram is sung regularly as part of daily assembly activities.
Similar Rule Was Earlier Introduced In Schools Soon after taking charge as West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari-led government directed schools across the state to make the singing of Vande Mataram compulsory during morning assemblies before classes begin. The directive was issued by the School Education Department and was made applicable to all schools functioning under the department with immediate effect. The order also clarified that the new instruction would replace all earlier practices and guidelines related to school assembly prayers. The decision came within days of Adhikari taking an oath as Chief Minister on May 9.
The debate around making Vande Mataram compulsory in educational institutions has surfaced repeatedly across the country over the years. Earlier this year, the Union Home Ministry had also issued guidelines stating that all six stanzas of the national song should be sung during government programmes and in schools.
