Students studying in universities and colleges across Uttar Pradesh may soon have to attend classes in uniforms. In a major move aimed at bringing discipline and uniformity to campuses, Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor of state universities Anandiben Patel has directed all higher education institutions in the state to strictly implement a uniform system for students. The announcement was made during a review meeting held at the Raj Bhavan with officials from government-run and aided colleges affiliated with Jannayak Chandrashekhar University in Ballia. ONE CAMPUS, ONE IDENTITY At present, dress codes are followed only in a few women’s colleges and self-financed courses in the state.
Most government universities and degree colleges allow students to attend classes in casual clothing. Under the new directive, every institution will now introduce uniforms based on designs and colours chosen independently by the college or university administration. The idea, according to officials, is to ensure a sense of equality, discipline, and a more focused academic environment on campuses. Institutions have also been asked to prepare a framework regarding the colour pattern, design, and timeline for implementation. The Governor emphasised that uniformity in educational institutions helps build discipline and creates a stronger academic atmosphere. TOUGH MESSAGE ON TEACHER CONDUCT During the meeting, the Governor also expressed concern over a recent controversy involving the Zoology Department at University of Lucknow, where a teacher was accused of harassing a female student and leaking examination papers.
Calling the incident serious, Anandiben Patel stated that teachers must avoid any behaviour that harms the dignity and respect associated with the teaching profession. She directed teachers to conduct classes regularly, remain punctual, and ensure proper attendance of students in classrooms. The remarks reflected the administration’s increasing focus on accountability and ethical conduct within higher education institutions. SKILLS OVER THEORY Apart from uniforms and discipline, the Governor also stressed the importance of employment-oriented learning. Colleges have been instructed to introduce short-term vocational and skill-based courses, especially aimed at helping female students become financially independent and self-reliant. Some of the suggested courses include GST and Accountancy Beautician and Mehndi Art training Bindi-making courses Millet-based food preparation Officials believe such programmes can improve employability and encourage entrepreneurship among students.
SAFE SPACES AND DIGITAL PUSH The Governor further ordered colleges and universities to form special grievance committees where both male and female students can freely raise complaints without fear or hesitation. The meeting also focused on modernising educational resources. Institutions were encouraged to digitise rare books and make greater use of digital learning platforms such as INFLIBNET. With these directives, Uttar Pradesh’s higher education system could soon witness major changes, from classroom discipline and student identity to vocational learning and campus accountability. Ends
