The excavation and tunnelling work for the 13-kilometre Zojila Tunnel has been completed, achieving a breakthrough. Constructed using the New Austrian tunnelling method, it is the longest high-altitude, bidirectional, single-tube tunnel in the world. Connecting Sonamarg to Minamarg, this all-weather route will provide stable, year-round connectivity to Ladakh, which previously remained shut for six months due to heavy snowfall.
The tunnel will reduce travel time across the pass from three and a half hours to 15 to 20 minutes. The project is critical for defence needs and emergency supplies. The executing agency expects the entire project, including internal safety works, to be completed in one and a half years.
