(AFP file photo) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said that he had told US President Donald Trump that Israel retained the right to defend itself against Iran at any time, following a fresh exchange of missile fire between the two countries. Speaking in a televised statement, Netanyahu said Israel had struck military and financial targets in Iran after Tehran fired missiles towards Israeli territory.
“At this moment, the fire on that front is contained — after we struck the terror regime in Tehran, it stopped attacking us," he said. Netanyahu added that should Iran resume hostilities, Israel would respond with full force. “Israel has a full right to self-defence, and we are exercising it as required. I say this to you, just as I say it with appreciation and respect in my good conversations with my friend President Trump," Netanyahu said. Trump urges restraint The call between Netanyahu and Trump came shortly after the first exchange of fire since an April ceasefire. Reports suggested a testy tone, following Trump’s earlier comment in an interview that he “calls all the shots" on the US-Israeli approach to Iran, implying Netanyahu had limited discretion.
In an interview with The Financial Times, Trump claimed," Netanyahu will have no choice but to accept an Iran deal. I call the shots. I call all the shots. Bibi does not." Iran had launched missiles in response to Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, warning that any further attacks on Lebanon would trigger renewed action. Following a brief exchange of strikes that raised fears of a renewed Middle East war, Iran and Israel have halted their attacks. No casualties have been reported on either side.
