(Image: AFP File) After months of blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s ambassador to Moscow on Monday said the passage will be opened but a transit fee will be imposed. In March, Iran retaliated to US-Israeli strikes by deploying waves of drones and missiles across the region and closing the Strait of Hormuz.
Following this, the maritime traffic dropped drastically from 100 daily transits to an average of just seven, immediately choking off a quarter of global oil trade. Later, the US imposed a blockade in retaliation. Check Live Updates According to Reuters, several tankers have managed to leave the Gulf recently, but oil and liquefied natural gas flows remain severely constrained. “Of course, this strait will be open, but with new conditions to be determined by the Iranian and Omani authorities," Ambassador Kazem Jalali told the Russian newspaper Izvestia in an interview published on Monday. “We understand that Iran and Oman provide certain services related to this strait. And fees will be charged for those services," he said.
According to Reuters, Iran has asserted that a permanent peace deal should allow it to demand fees for ships passing through the strait, which would vary depending upon the type of ship, its cargo and prevailing conditions. In past months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly opposed Iran’s want to levy toll at the Strait of Hormuz. In late May, the US warned Oman not to be involved in Iran’s effort to impose a toll. Meanwhile, Israel stopped its strikes on Iran on Monday at the request of US President Donald Trump, a senior Israeli official told Israel’s Channel 12, as both sides pulled back from the first exchange of fire since an April truce took effect.
