Last Updated: June 08, 2026, 18:44 IST Hours after rebel Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that she along with nearly 20 MPs has sought to align with the Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mahua Moitra called these lawmakers as “greedy self-serving traitors". Dastidar on Monday claimed that nearly 20 party MPs had sought to align with the Democratic Alliance (NDA) and submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. She indicated that the split was driven by the outcome of the recent Assembly elections.
Following this, Moitra said: “MPs won in 2024 on TMC ticket. Mandate was NOT for NDA. All the greedy self-serving traitors with yellow pants can please join BJP now – resign your seats & contest on BJP ticket. Let’s see what big heroes you are." Previously, the Trinamool Congress MP accused the dissidents of surviving on the popularity of party chief Mamata Banerjee and lacking the resolve to remain in the opposition. The developments came as Mamata Banerjee reached New Delhi to attend the INDIA bloc meeting along with TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and several senior leaders.
Meanwhile, the rebel MPs gathered at the Motilal Nehru Marg residence of Union Minister and BJP’s West Bengal election in-charge Bhupender Yadav. The meeting was reportedly attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Sources told News18 that rebel MPs Prasun Banerjee (Howrah), Sharmila Sarkar (Bardhaman Purba), Jagadish Chandra Basunia (Cooch Behar), Arup Chakraborty (Bankura), Kalipada Soren (Jhargram), Bapi Haldar (Mathurapur) and Asit Mal (Bolpur) attended the meeting. Interestingly, the dissident camp of about 20 MPs will likely be able to cross the two-thirds threshold required under the anti-defection law’s merger provision.
If recognised by parliamentary authorities, the group could seek protection from disqualification under the Tenth Schedule.
