(AFP file photo) Iran has held the United States directly responsible for Israeli actions in Lebanon, warning that any escalation in the region would have consequences for Washington. Overnight exchanges of fire between Iran and Israel, the first since a fragile ceasefire in April, have worsened already “chaotic" diplomacy, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday. Baghaei added that Tehran is maintaining communications with Washington, but in an atmosphere of “extreme suspicion." Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esamil Baghaei on Monday said that the US’ responsibilities in Israel’s aggression are clear, adding that it is “natural" for the ongoing diplomatic efforts with the US to be affected by the resumption of hostilities.

He criticised International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi for allegedly ignoring the realities of the conflict and holding biased political views that undermine the agency’s legitimacy. He warned that no action by Israel occurs without prior coordination with the US.

“No one in the region believes that the Zionist regime (Israel) carries out any action without prior coordination and cooperation with the United States… the consequences of any escalation will also fall on Washington," Baghaei said. He added that CENTCOM is fully coordinating with Israel in both defensive and offensive operations, despite US officials’ public claims to the contrary. “We know that CENTCOM is fully coordinating and cooperating with the Zionist regime in both defensive and offensive operations," the spokesperson noted. Baghaei stressed that as a party to the April 8 ceasefire, the US is responsible for any violations, whether through direct military action or via Israeli operations in Lebanon. He said Iran holds Washington accountable for regional instability and any further escalation.
