Top defence sources have defended the Great Nicobar development project, describing the opposition's criticism as a lack of geographical understanding. Sources emphasized that the project is driven by strategic national interests rather than commercial real estate motives, aiming to strengthen India's presence in the Eastern Indian Ocean. A new dual-use airport for civil aviation and the Navy will be constructed at Galathea Bay in the next five years.
The project, involving a combined investment of thirteen thousand crore rupees by the defence and civil aviation ministries, is located close to the Malacca Strait for maritime security. Furthermore, plans to expand an existing naval airbase were shelved to protect local biodiversity, opting instead for the new greenfield site.
