The Trinamool Congress is facing a potential split in West Bengal as twenty of its Members of Parliament prepare to form a separate faction. According to sources, these rebel parliamentarians are planning to merge their parliamentary party with the Bharatiya Janata Party under the anti-defection law. The group is scheduled to hold a meeting at a rebel member's residence and will subsequently submit a formal letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker to join the Democratic Alliance.
The rebel faction has stated that the current party chief is no longer their leader, despite remaining within the political outfit for now. Meanwhile, senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party have held deliberations in the national capital to discuss the feasibility of this merger. With the state party having twenty-eight representatives in the lower house in total, the twenty rebel members comfortably surpass the two-thirds majority required to avoid disqualification.
The top leadership of the state party is currently in the national capital as the political crisis unfolds.
