(Getty) India’s ambitious Great Nicobar Island (GNI) development plan marks a significant shift in the country’s maritime strategy, according to top defence sources familiar with the project accessed by CNN-News18. The integrated development initiative aims to transform the ecologically sensitive island territory into a forward-operating logistics and economic hub, strengthening India’s presence in one of the world’s most strategically important maritime regions.
Located near the Six Degree Channel and the Malacca Strait, a critical global shipping corridor, the project comprises a trans-shipment port, a naval-controlled airfield, a township, and a power plant. Defence officials describe the plan as a response to evolving geopolitical challenges in the Indian Ocean Region, including the growing military footprint of extra-regional powers. Sources said the project is designed to address vulnerabilities in India’s maritime posture by replacing reliance on older and relatively constrained facilities with purpose-built greenfield infrastructure. The development is expected to enhance India’s ability to monitor and secure critical Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs), while improving preparedness against asymmetric threats such as narco-terrorism and illicit maritime activity. Officials also argue that the project carries a strong economic rationale. By developing a major trans-shipment facility within Indian territory, New Delhi aims to reduce dependence on foreign ports for cargo handling and strengthen its position in regional maritime trade.
The initiative, however, has drawn attention because of its location in an environmentally sensitive region. Defence sources maintain that the project seeks to balance strategic imperatives with ecological responsibilities. According to the blueprint, Rs 2,220.41 crore has been earmarked for wildlife conservation and environmental mitigation measures. The plan also includes assurances that there will be no physical displacement of indigenous tribal communities, a key concern raised by environmental and human rights groups during the project’s review process. Officials contend that the Great Nicobar development could become a model demonstrating that strategic infrastructure, economic growth, and environmental stewardship can coexist. As India expands its role in the Indo-Pacific, the project is expected to become a cornerstone of the country’s long-term maritime and security architecture.
