(AP) Israel reportedly struck energy infrastructure in Iran, marking a sharp escalation in regional tensions after the two sides exchanged direct attacks for the first time since a fragile ceasefire was reached two months ago. The Fars news agency reports that the Karun Mahshahr Petrochemical Company in the Khuzestan Province was hit by strikes carried out by “the Zionist enemy, causing partial damage." Several petrochemical facilities in the same area were targeted by Israel in April. Meanwhile, the Israeli military also confirmed that it had struck several targets at a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr.
“A short while ago, the Israeli Air Force struck several targets at the petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, in southwestern Iran," the military said in a statement. The Mahshahr special petrochemical economic zone was being evacuated after Israel’s confirmation. IRNA News Agency reported that the IRGC Aerospace Force launched Operation Victory (Nasr), striking vital installations at the strategic Nevatim and Tel Nof air bases, in retaliation for Israel’s missile attacks on multiple radar sites in three regions of the country. The IRGC said Iran was “ready to carry out operations on all fronts, and planning for the response has been prepared based on various enemy scenarios". Why Are Iran, Israel Trading Fire Again? The two countries resumed strikes on Monday after Iran fired salvos of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation for Israel’s attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs, despite Trump’s directive to Israel to stop attacks in Lebanon to allow room for a deal to end the war.
Israel launched missile attacks in retaliation, striking 20 targets in Iran. Israel also said it intercepted a missile from Yemen, home to the Iran-backed Houthis. Meanwhile, Trump said new strikes by Israel and Iran would not affect his administration’s peace talks with Tehran, adding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “doesn’t call the shots." “It’s not going to have any impact on the deal. I call the shots. I call all the shots. He (Netanyahu) doesn’t call the shots," he told Financial Times. Over the past week, Iranian officials repeatedly warned that any peace arrangement with the United States would require a ceasefire “on all fronts", including Lebanon and Gaza. As Israel intensified operations against Hezbollah with a devastating military offensive in Lebanon, Trump reportedly intervened directly, urging Netanyahu to avoid actions that could derail diplomacy with Tehran.
