The INDIA bloc meeting, being held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, is expected to bring together top opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Trinamool Congress leaders Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, among others. According to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, 23 political parties have confirmed their participation in the meeting.
In a post on X, Ramesh asserted that the “INDIA janbandhan" continues to remain united despite differences among its partners. However, the opposition grouping enters the meeting amid changed political equations. The Aam Aadmi Party has publicly distanced itself from the alliance, while the DMK decided not to attend the gathering after its ties with the Congress in Tamil Nadu broke down. Both parties are expected to remain absent from Monday’s deliberations. The alliance is expected to discuss a common strategy to challenge the BJP on national issues and strengthen coordination ahead of future electoral battles, including state elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. The meeting also comes against the backdrop of growing debates within the opposition camp after recent assembly election outcomes altered the balance of power among regional parties. While leaders are expected to publicly emphasise unity, several contentious issues are likely to be discussed behind closed doors. The posters targeting Rahul Gandhi have added another layer of political intrigue to the day, drawing attention to past remarks by opposition leaders and highlighting the complexities facing the INDIA bloc as it seeks to regroup and present a united front. The last formal meeting of the INDI Alliance was held in June 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Since then, opposition parties have largely coordinated through consultations before Parliament sessions and other strategic discussions.
