US President Donald Trump (Credits: Reuters) US President Donald Trump has said negotiations with Iran are “very close" to producing an agreement, but stressed that one of the remaining issues is ensuring Tehran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon through any means, including purchasing or acquiring one. Speaking in an interview with NBC aired on Sunday, Trump claimed Iran had already accepted that it would not possess nuclear weapons. However, he said he wanted stronger language in the proposed agreement to prevent Tehran from obtaining such weapons from outside sources. Trump pushes broader nuclear restrictions Asked about the status of the talks, Trump said only a few issues remained unresolved. “I think we’re very close. We have a couple of points. They don’t even seem like big points," he said.
“They’ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons." Trump explained that an earlier draft of the agreement focused on preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. However, he argued that the deal should also explicitly ban Iran from buying, purchasing or acquiring them. “We had a clause in there that they will not develop nuclear weapons," Trump said. “I said what happens if they don’t develop but they go out and purchase or acquire?".@POTUS on a deal with Iran: “We’re very close. So they don’t have the right to develop or purchase, acquire or buy." Uranium issue remains a major obstacle The comments come as indirect negotiations aimed at ending the war between Iran, the United States and Israel continue without a final agreement.
Weeks of talks have failed to secure a breakthrough or reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments. In the same interview, Trump said he knows where Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile is located and wants it removed and destroyed as part of any settlement. “If we make a deal, if we make a deal now we’re friendly, we’ll all go together" to recover this uranium, he said. “We’ll take it out and destroy it." The fate of Iran’s enriched uranium remains one of the most difficult issues in the negotiations. Washington wants Tehran to hand over its near-weapons-grade uranium, limit its nuclear activities and agree to wider security measures. Iran, however, has long maintained that its nuclear programme is peaceful and insists it has the right to enrich uranium. Tehran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons, while the US and Israel continue to argue that stronger safeguards are needed to prevent Iran from obtaining them.
