End Of An Era? No FIFA World Cup For Luis SuĆ”rez Published By, Last Updated: May 31, 2026, 20:42 IST Luis SuĆ”rez left out of Uruguay FIFA World Cup team, all-time top scorer likely ends international career amidst questions over Marcelo Bielsa tensions. Rapid Read Luis Suarez has been snubbed from the FIFA World Cup squad (Picture credit: AP) Star Inter Miami striker Luis SuĆ”rez has been left out of Uruguayās FIFA World Cup squad, seemingly marking an end to his international career. Moreover, it marks the first time since Uruguayās return to the FIFA World Cup in 2010 that SuĆ”rez hasnāt been included in La Celesteās team for the tournament. At the international level, SuĆ”rez remains Uruguayās all-time leading goalscorer and was once the highest scorer in CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup qualifying history before being overtaken by Lionel Messi.
SuĆ”rez has represented Uruguay at four FIFA World Cups and five Copa AmĆ©rica tournaments, while also featuring for La Celeste at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Beyond his achievements on the pitch, SuĆ”rez has found himself at the centre of controversy throughout his career. Notable incidents include his infamous goal-line handball against Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, three separate biting incidents involving opponents, allegations of diving, a racism-related controversy and several spitting incidents. After the official team announcement, SuĆ”rez saw his run of four successive FIFA World Cup appearances come to an end. He was part of Uruguayās teams for South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and, most recently, Qatar 2022.
āI would never turn down the national team if they need me, especially not with a World Cup around the corner," SuĆ”rez had recently said. But that call-up never arrived, meaning Uruguayās all-time leading scorer, SuĆ”rez, with 69 goals in 143 international appearances, will not be part of the team. The 39-year-old, who plays alongside Messi at Inter Miami, is now all set to miss what could have been his final chance to feature in a major international tournament. The exact reason behind SuĆ”rezās omission remains unclear, with no indication yet as to whether it was driven by concerns over his physical condition or linked to the reported tensions between SuĆ”rez and Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa that surfaced in 2024.
