(AP Photo) Some members of the Glazer family have reportedly been mulling over the possibility of selling their stake in English football club Manchester United after more than two decades of ownership. According to a Bloomberg News report, several stakeholders within the US-based billionaire family have been evaluating options to divest part or all of their holdings in the English Premier League club. Manchester United‘s New York-listed shares rose 7% in extended trading following the report.
Discussions initially focused on stake sales by individual family members. Those involved are now reportedly seeking to persuade other relatives to participate in a broader sale process. Manchester United did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, while representatives of the Glazer family could not immediately be reached. The latest deliberations come more than two years after the family sold an approximately 29% stake in the club to INEOS Group Chairman Jim Ratcliffe, granting the billionaire control of Manchester United’s soccer operations. Despite retaining a majority ownership position, the Glazer family has faced sustained criticism from supporters over the club’s debt burden, spending on player acquisitions, and delays in infrastructure investment.
Since taking charge of football operations, Ratcliffe has introduced measures aimed at improving the club’s performance, including workforce reductions and higher ticket prices. After years of struggling to replicate the success achieved on and off the pitch under Alex Ferguson, United secured a return to the Champions League for the first time in two seasons by finishing third this season under Michael Carrick. Manchester United shares closed Wednesday at $21.11, valuing the Old Trafford club at $3.64 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
