US President Donald Trump and Iran's Supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei (Photos: AFP) US President Donald Trump has said there is a “good probability" he knows the whereabouts of Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, while also claiming that the Iranian figure is “very seriously injured". Speaking in an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump was asked if he knew where Khamenei was or how he was doing physically. He replied, “I don’t want to say whether or not I know where he is, but there’s a good probability that I do." When pressed further on whether Khamenei was inside Iran, Trump declined to answer, saying, “I’d rather not say that.".@POTUS on Mojtaba Khamenei: “I don’t want to say whether or not I know where he is, but there’s a good probability that I do… He’s very seriously injured." pic.twitter.com/BgzgTk4AVy— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) June 7, 2026 Trump also commented on Khamenei’s condition, stating that he is “pretty badly injured" and “very seriously injured", adding that despite this, there is “a certain bravery" in how he has continued to speak publicly.
Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen in public since he was wounded in strikes that killed his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei during the early phase of the US-Israeli bombing campaign on February 28, which marked the start of the ongoing war. In the interview, Trump also called the younger Khamenei as “more rational" compared to his father, saying he is “younger" and “I think more rational". A lot of people, if they were injured that badly, they wouldn’t be talking about, you know, how we’re doing with the United States. They’d have other things on their mind," the US president said. On unfreezing Iran’s assets At the same interview, Trump also said that any potential deal aimed at ending the war with Iran would not include the immediate release of frozen Iranian assets.
He added that Iran must first reach an agreement with Washington before any such steps are considered. Trump noted a peace deal “comes first" and added that future talks with Tehran would depend on its conduct. “If they behave, if they do a good job, we start talking," he said. Iran has been seeking the release of more than $100 billion in frozen overseas assets as part of any possible agreement with Washington. Trump also noted that he was not demanding Lebanon be included in any short-term deal with Tehran.
