The former Minister Shivraj Tangadagi has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP saying that the country is facing multiple economic challenges while the ruling party continues to remain disconnected from people’s concerns. Addressing reporters in Karatagi on Sunday, Mr. Tangadagi said, “There is no petrol in the country, no respect abroad, the rupee is losing value and there is no courage to face the media. Yet, the arrogance of the BJP leaders remains unchanged.” He said that farmers are facing shortages of fertilisers and seeds and that the prices of essential commodities have risen sharply making life difficult for ordinary citizens.
Despite these issues, the Prime Minister has remained silent, he claimed. Comparing the BJP to a “drama company”, Mr. Tangadagi said that BJP leaders have staged protests across the country carrying empty LPG cylinders when cooking gas prices were marginally increased during the UPA government’s tenure. “Where are leaders like Shobha Karandlaje and Smriti Irani now?” he asked. He also criticised what he described as attempts by some BJP leaders to justify rising fuel prices by advising people to consume it in less quantities and instead, use public transport.
Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the country’s economic situation, Mr. Tangadagi said that BJP leaders earlier dismissed such concerns but they should now explain the present state of the economy. On speculation surrounding Ministerial berths in the newly formed State government led by D.K. Shivakumar, Mr. Tangadagi appealed to his supporters not to organise protests demanding a Cabinet position for him. “I am a loyal worker of the Congress. No one should take to the streets seeking a Ministerial berth for me.
Such actions will embarrass the party,” he said. Responding to a question, he said that there is nothing wrong with legislators Basavaraj Rayareddi and Raghavendra Hitnal seeking Ministerial positions for themselves. Stating that the Congress has provided him with several opportunities in public life, Mr. Tangadagi expressed the confidence that he will find a place in the second phase of Cabinet expansion.
