E CIA Official Accused Of Hoarding $40 Million In Gold Bars, Judge Calls Him Flight Risk Published By, Last Updated: June 06, 2026, 22:01 IST E CIA official David Rush is accused of fraud, hiding assets including 300 gold bars, 2 million USD in cash and luxury watches. (Image: X) A US judge has ordered a former CIA official to remain in custody pending trial, agreeing with prosecutors that he was a flight risk due to his intelligence background, access to sensitive information and alleged efforts to conceal assets. David Rush, 49, is accused of stealing public funds and was described by prosecutors as a “master manipulator" who allegedly misled neighbours about his profession and exploited his senior position within the intelligence community. During a hearing in Virginia on Friday, government lawyers argued that Rush “cannot be trusted" and was “fully willing and able to skirt the rules," CBS News reported.
Fraud Allegations Stem From Time-Sheet Claims According to court filings, Rush held a top-secret security clearance and occupied a senior role in a US government agency. Investigators began examining his activities after the FBI received a referral from the CIA. The criminal complaint currently centres on allegations that Rush submitted fraudulent time sheets, resulting in roughly $70,000 in improper payments. However, investigators have uncovered a much larger cache of assets during a search of his Virginia residence. The FBI reportedly recovered more than 300 gold bars valued at approximately $40 million, along with around $2 million in cash and over 30 luxury watches. Prosecutors claim Rush received gold bars and foreign currency intended for “work-related expenses" between November 2025 and March 2026 but failed to properly account for them. Defence Dismisses Accusations As ‘Sensational’ Authorities further allege that he attempted to conceal funds by converting them into tradable commodities and misrepresented aspects of his military and educational background, including claims that he had served as a Navy pilot.
Rush’s defence team rejected the allegations, describing some of the government’s claims as “sensational". His lawyer argued that aspects of intelligence work naturally “sound bizarre and secretive" and maintained that the gold bars had been disclosed to investigators and securely stored at his home. Rejecting a request for home detention, US Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick said Rush’s professional experience made him uniquely capable of avoiding law enforcement. “He’s in a different position than most people to flee and avoid detection by law enforcement," the judge said.
