The incident occurred near the Old West End Festival, an annual two-day event held in one of Toledo’s historic neighbourhoods. The festival, which draws large crowds every year, features live music performances, food vendors, shopping and tours of historic homes. The Toledo Police Department said officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities confirmed that multiple injured individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Toledo City Council member Theresa Morris said at least eight people were injured in the incident. She described the shooting as a tragedy for both residents and the many visitors who attend the festival every year.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunfire erupted during the event. Kevin Berry, who was attending the festival and listening to a live music performance in a nearby arboretum, said several gunshots rang out unexpectedly, causing people around him to immediately seek cover. According to Berry, a firearm was later thrown to the ground within sight of where he was standing. c He said officers who had already been deployed at the festival quickly moved in to secure the scene and respond to the emergency. Berry, who has medical training and previously served in the US Navy, said he walked through the area looking for anyone who required assistance. He reported seeing at least five people suffering from gunshot injuries spread across the arboretum area. Reacting to the incident, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed concern over the violence, saying community festivals should remain safe spaces where families can gather without fear.
