(Left to right) (Image: PTI) A day ahead of the INDIA bloc’s crucial meeting, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh on Sunday sought to establish that the opposition group remains united despite Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a key ally of the bloc, choosing to skip the meet. In a post on X, Ramesh said that “INDIA janbandhan continues to stand united" and that 23 political parties are set to attend the gathering at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Monday.
The Congress MP added the meeting would bring together parties united in their opposition to PM Narendra Modi-led government. He noted that while some parties would not attend the gathering for their own reasons, they continue to share concerns about issues such as alleged attacks on democratic institutions, actions that snatch away the right to vote for millions of Indians, rising prices, unemployment, and the government’s handling of foreign policy. 23 political parties have confirmed participation in the INDIA janbandhan meeting at Constitution Club, New Delhi on Monday June 8, 2026, at 12 noon. Mamata Banerjee To Join Key Opposition Gathering Among the prominent leaders expected at the meeting is Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who landed in the national capital on Sunday to participate in the discussions.
This is the first meeting of the opposition bloc after the TMC’s crushing defeat in the West Bengal assembly polls. The meeting comes at a significant moment for the opposition alliance, as it seeks to strengthen coordination against the BJP’s growing political dominance while also addressing internal differences among constituent parties. DMK To Skip Meeting Amid Differences With Congress Notably, the DMK has decided to skip the meeting, citing differences with the Congress over its decision to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu after the Assembly elections. The CPI(M), which recently expressed concerns to Congress over campaign rhetoric during the Kerala Assembly elections, will nevertheless attend the meeting. CPI(M) MP John Brittas is expected to represent the party. The gathering is expected to focus on opposition unity, coordination on national issues, and the alliance’s future political strategy.
