Russian affairs analyst Andrey Kortunov says there is cautious optimism, but little real change, ahead of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner's latest visit to Moscow, since President Trump has indicated there are no new ideas on the table beyond the proposals discussed in Anchorage a year ago, which Ukraine did not accept.

Kortunov says both Russia and Ukraine remain locked in a cycle of escalation, with Ukraine striking deeper into Russian territory and Russia targeting Ukrainian ports to cut off Black Sea access, alongside rising tension between Russia and European nations that could risk a wider confrontation with NATO.

He sees few grounds for optimism that the current 72-hour ceasefire will develop into a lasting settlement. Find us on Check our website Check out
