Feminist icon, writer and activist Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92, leaving behind a decades-long legacy of campaigning for gender equality and social change. From a difficult childhood in Ohio, Steinem went on to study at Smith College and in India, where she drew inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of grassroots organising.
She rose to national prominence in 1963 after going undercover as a waitress at a Playboy Club and exposing the exploitation of its female workers. She later co-founded Ms. magazine, giving a powerful platform to the growing feminist movement and issues including domestic violence, equal pay and maternity leave.
Steinem also helped establish organisations supporting women in politics and remained a prominent activist, including at the Women’s March following Donald Trump’s election in 2016. She continued speaking out on reproductive rights and sexual harassment, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
