A seven-foot deep sinkhole has emerged on the Ganga Expressway on the Prayagraj-bound carriageway near a toll plaza following heavy rainfall, causing significant road damage and raising serious commuter safety concerns. Visuals from the spot showed parts of the road caving in, while officials rushed to cover gaping holes with cloth to prevent filming before undertaking hurried repair work.
The incident has put the construction quality and maintenance of the flagship expressway project under severe scrutiny, especially as it comes just months after its inauguration. This marks the second time in several days that emergency repair operations were required along the corridor, with a toll plaza previously getting submerged in rainwater. While traffic was temporarily restored after filling the cave-in, the private concessionaire managing the stretch stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
