Following the review, the state home department announced that the security cover provided to Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad was being downgraded. Subsequently, Rabri Devi was asked to vacate 10 Circular Road as the residence has now been allotted to Bihar minister for Animal and Fisheries Resources Nand Kishore Ram. The Y-category security cover provided to Tej Pratap, chief of the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) and Lalu Prasad's elder son, was also withdrawn, as per the notification. Earlier, while speaking at a public event in Sheikhpura, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary criticised the practice of former officials treating government residences as personal property. "The Chief Minister's residence belongs to the people. It cannot be treated as anyone's personal fiefdom or ancestral property," he said, adding that he vacated government accommodations within 24 hours of his tenure ending.
The government move prompted Rabri Devi to challenge Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary that he get the bungalow, occupied by her for two decades, by "force". According to the notification issued by the state government on Thursday, Rabri Devi had previously been allotted an alternative government accommodation at Hardinge Road in her capacity as Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council, but had not yet moved. Questioning the rationale behind the state's security policy, Yadav asked why several BJP and NDA leaders continued to enjoy security protection while senior RJD leaders were seeing theirs reduced.
Shakti Yadav, a former MLA, sat outside the residence of the RJD leaders, alleging that the proverbial first family of his party was indignant over "repeated insults by the government" and the RJD rank and file would, therefore, take care of their security needs on their own. "The government wants our leaders to be killed. But we will try to ensure their security on our own," said Yadav. The bungalow at 10 Circular Road has long been associated with the family of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Rabri Devi served as Bihar's CM from the residence during her tenure in office, and the premises remained a significant political address for the RJD. The Bihar government has given the Lalu family a 15-day deadline to vacate the official residence, requiring them to leave by mid-June.
