Heavy rains lashed central and northern Kerala on Saturday (June 6), triggered by the active monsoon conditions supported by strong westerlies and a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. The State is likely to witness active monsoon conditions for three more days with heavy to very heavy rains forecast in central and northern districts.
An orange alert has been issued for seven districtsâThrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragodâon Sunday (June 7), with very heavy rainfall in the range of 12 cm to 20 cm predicted in 24 hours. The rest of the State has been put on yellow alert, with heavy rainfall in the range of 7 cm to 11 cm likely in 24 hours.
An orange alert has been issued for five districtsâMalappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragodâon Monday (June 8) and four districtsâKozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragodâon Tuesday (June 9). There would be a gradual reduction in the rainfall activity thereafter, with the monsoon current losing
its strength for some time. Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture off the coast of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep areas until June 9 as squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph is likely over the area.
