A escalating US-Canada trade dispute is squeezing small businesses along the border, with tariffs raising costs and forcing layoffs. Michigan woodworking firm Howard Family Designs relies on Canadian lumber, but new US levies of up to 50 percent on $20 billion of Canadian exports have driven up prices, costing the company customers and staff.
Canada has responded with matching 50 percent tariffs on American goods, due within two weeks, as Michigan alone sends roughly a third of its exports northward. Residents near the Ambassador Bridge say the dispute is straining a once-close relationship between the neighbouring countries.
