Maharashtra’s food safety crackdown has intensified, with the state FDA taking a series of actions against food outlets across Mumbai and other areas. Five eateries were shut down on August 19, the sale of loose edible oil was banned a day later, and licences of nine outlets were suspended on August 24 following inspections that flagged serious hygiene violations.
Inspectors reportedly found dirty floors, slippery kitchen areas, poor food storage, refrigerator ice build-up and staff hygiene lapses. The crackdown has also extended to food outlets around schools, with a statewide drive covering 250 schools and action taken against 15 outlets. The inspections have raised wider questions about food hygiene and safety standards in kitchens serving the public.
