The Indian men’s cricket team for the Asian Games 2026 was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday. Japan is set to host the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. The men’s cricket tournament at the Asian Games will start from September 24 and conclude with the medal matches on October 3. Shreyas Iyer has been named as the Indian T20 captain, Tilak Varma will be the vice-captain while teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also made the 15-member India squad.
At just 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is now the youngest player to be picked for any Indian team for an international event. The call-up comes on the back of brilliant showings in IPL 2026, where he emerged as the Orange Cap winner. India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is also part of the unit for the Asian Games. The 31-year-old Iyer will replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s new T20 captain after returning to India’s short format setup. He last played a T20I in December 2023. Cricket will be played at the Asian Games for the fourth time in 2026.
Matches will be played in T20 format and have been granted international status. At Hangzhou 2023, India won gold medals in both men’s and women’s cricket events. The BCCI, on Saturday, also announced the T20 squads for India’s tours to Ireland and England preceding the Asian Games. All three squads are largely similar barring minor tweaks. Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the touring squad to the UK, with Mohammed Siraj and Prince Yadav replacing him. India will begin their tour with two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series from July 1 to 11.
Cricket is also set to make a long-awaited return to the Olympic Games at LA 2028.
