A fragile peace process in the Middle East has collapsed following a dispute between the US President and the Israeli Prime Minister regarding expanding military operations in Lebanon. Consequently, Iran suspended negotiations with the United States and threatened to completely close the Strait of Hormuz, causing global oil prices to spike. The conflict originally escalated in late February after a joint US-Israeli air campaign resulted in the death of Iran's leadership, triggering retaliatory missile and drone strikes across the region.
The war rapidly expanded into a global economic crisis with attacks on key energy infrastructure, including oil hubs and gas fields. Although a diplomatic breakthrough appeared imminent by late May with a comprehensive deal mediated by the US, the truce disintegrated by early June. The US President has publicly blamed congressional gridlock for hindering negotiating power as the relationship with Israel's leadership fractures and the region faces the threat of renewed total war.
