Sustainable utilisation of marine resources, while protecting the marine environment, is essential for future economic growth, said Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, Director Dr. Shailesh Nayak. He was speaking after inaugurating the Centre of Excellence on Blue Economy at Vignan’s University in Vadlamudi, Guntur district, on Saturday (August 22, 2026). Established with the theme “Sustainable Ocean–Thriving Future,” the centre will focus on coastal conservation, ocean technologies, blue growth, research, innovation, policy and skill development.
Dr. Nayak said the blue economy should be integrated with climate change, ecological balance, and livelihoods, with environmental conservation and human safety remaining central. Union Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala said fisheries, shipping, offshore and wave energy, tourism and logistics offered vast opportunities. He called for coordinated efforts by governments, industry and educational institutions and urged students and start-ups to develop technological solutions.
INCOIS Director Dr. T.M. Balakrishnan Nair stressed integrating ocean-based sectors and developing the centre as a regional hub for ocean science and skill development. Vignan’s University and INCOIS signed an MoU for collaboration in ocean observation, information
systems, research, technology transfer and skill development, including internships and hands-on training. Vignan’s Institutions chairman Dr. Lavu Rathaiah and Vice-Chairman Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu highlighted opportunities in offshore energy, marine biotechnology, aquaculture, fisheries, seaweed and marine minerals.
