Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is witnessing a major security crackdown ahead of a planned protest call by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee on June 9, with Pakistan deploying Army and Rangers personnel across several districts, top intelligence sources told CNN-News18.
According to sources, Shahzaib Habib, a member of the Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee, was killed during a late-night crackdown by Pakistan security forces in Rawalakot. Umar Nazir, another key member of the Awami Action Committee, was injured. Top intelligence sources said seven others were also injured during the military crackdown in Rawalakot district. Internet and cellular services have also been suspended in several areas amid the ongoing crackdown.
The PoK administration last night banned the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee. The move has further escalated tensions in the region, with Pakistan’s military preparing to impose curfew-like restrictions to prevent mobilisation ahead of the protest call. The Pakistan and PoK administrations fhave also issued travel advisories, ordering visitors and tourists to leave the region immediately ahead of the June 9 protests. “Leave immediately" advisories have been issued as tourism activity has been halted from June 5 to June 20 in view of the looming Awami Action Committee strike, sources said. Sources said the June 9 protest call has triggered panic within the Pakistan establishment, prompting pre-emptive deployments, communication restrictions and arrests across the region.
