A major political storm has erupted in Tamil Nadu after former BJP state president K Annamalai announced his decision to leave the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Within just 24 hours of his exit, several key BJP leaders and office bearers have resigned, triggering fears of a larger exodus from the party's Tamil Nadu unit.
Among those who stepped down are Tamil Nadu BJP Vice President Karu Nagarajan and State Secretary Sumathi Venkatesh.
Several district-level functionaries and grassroots workers have also resigned, openly declaring their loyalty to Annamalai and criticizing what they describe as internal politics within the state BJP.
Supporters gave Annamalai a grand welcome at Chennai Airport after his return from New Delhi.
