In a major breakthrough in the Bhangar bomb blast investigation, the Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Shaukat Mulla. The arrest came late Friday night after an extensive manhunt and surveillance operation conducted by the federal agency. The case relates to a crude bomb explosion that took place on March 19 in Dakshin Mamudpur village of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. The blast killed one person and seriously injured three others who were allegedly involved in manufacturing crude bombs ahead of elections.
According to NIA officials, Shaukat Mulla had been evading investigators after multiple raids were conducted at locations linked to him across South and North 24 Parganas. Sources claim he was intercepted near Kolkata while allegedly attempting to reach his legal team. However, his family maintains that he was voluntarily surrendering before the agency. Earlier, NIA had arrested another accused, Sainur Mulla, who allegedly transported the victims after the explosion. With the arrest of Shaukat Mulla, the total number of arrests in the case has risen to four.
The former MLA is considered an influential political figure in South 24 Parganas, particularly in the Diamond Harbour region. He is expected to be produced before a special NIA court, where the agency is likely to seek custodial interrogation.
