News18 In a major operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)’s Nagpur Regional Unit seized over 522 kg of cannabis worth an estimated Rs 2.61 crore and arrested two people linked to an inter-state drug smuggling racket. The operation was carried out at the Mathni Toll Plaza on Highway-53 near Mouda in Nagpur, where officials intercepted a 16-tonne Tata Motors truck travelling from the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border towards Maharashtra.
During the search, DRI officers recovered 247 packets of cannabis concealed inside eight HDPE bags hidden in specially created secret compartments within the truck. The contraband was found concealed behind the driver’s seat, in a secret compartment between the driver and passenger seats, inside a locked toolbox beneath the truck and on the roof of the cabin. The seized cannabis weighed more than 522 kg and has an estimated value of ₹2.61 crore. The truck, valued at around Rs 8.5 lakh, was also seized. Following the operation, two individuals were arrested and a case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The latest seizure is part of the DRI’s crackdown on a drug smuggling network operating along the Odisha-Central India-Maharashtra route. Earlier this year, the agency had seized more than 1,250 kg of cannabis in two separate but linked operations. Cannabis worth Rs 6.25 crore was recovered during those operations, and four people, including the alleged mastermind of the network, were arrested.
