The development comes amid renewed hostilities in the region and has raised fears of a wider conflict. Iran launches drones towards Strait of Hormuz The latest tensions emerged after Iran launched multiple drones towards the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces shot down at least four of the drones. US officials said the one-way attack drones appeared to be aimed at either commercial vessels travelling through the strategic waterway or US military assets operating in the area. CENTCOM said the drones posed an immediate threat to maritime traffic in the region. “Moments ago, CENTCOM forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz. The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic," the command said in a statement. US carries out retaliatory strikes Following the interceptions, US forces launched strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island. The US military said the action was taken to prevent further attacks and safeguard maritime traffic. “US forces subsequently struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island to defend against further attacks. American forces remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defence," CENTCOM said. The latest incident marks another rise in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite an ongoing ceasefire and parallel diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
Ceasefire under strain The United States and Iran have continued to accuse each other of breaching the ceasefire that was intended to end weeks of hostilities across the Middle East. The conflict intensified earlier this week when Iran launched missiles and drones at US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. The US military said the projectiles were intercepted and caused no major damage. An Indian national was killed in a strike at Kuwait airport. Saturday’s drone launch near the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies, is expected to heighten concerns over regional stability and maritime security. Trump claims Iran’s military weakened Amid the developments, US President Donald Trump said American strikes had significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, while acknowledging that Tehran still retained some offensive capacity. “We’ve totally destroyed their military," Trump told NBC News. He said most of Iran’s drone factories, launching pads and missile manufacturing facilities had been knocked out, but added that the country still possessed missiles and drones. Trump estimated that Iran retains about “21% to 22%" of its missile arsenal.
“It’s a lot of missiles, but it’s not what it was when we first attacked," he said.
