His statement immediately triggered speculation over where he could contest in 2027 Punjab polls. Speculation grew louder when the BJP decided not to renominate Bittu for another term in Rajya Sabha. The answer may lie in a city that has shaped much of his political career – Ludhiana. For the BJP, Ludhiana is not just another electoral battleground. It could become the party’s most important testing ground ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Punjab remains one of the BJP’s toughest electoral frontiers. Since ending its long-standing alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, the party has been attempting to build an independent political identity in the state. To do that, it needs a region where it can demonstrate both organisational strength and electoral viability. Ludhiana offers exactly that. Punjab’s largest city and industrial hub, Ludhiana has traditionally been more receptive to the BJP than many rural parts of the state. The party has historically enjoyed support among traders, industrialists and sections of the urban middle class.
More importantly, the parliamentary constituency comprises nine Assembly segments, making it a microcosm of urban and semi-urban Punjab. A strong performance here can have a psychological impact far beyond district boundaries. Bittu’s Deep Roots in Ludhiana Unlike many leaders imported into state politics at election time, Bittu has built a long association with Ludhiana. After entering Parliament from Anandpur Sahib in 2009, he shifted his political focus to Ludhiana and won the Lok Sabha seat in both 2014 and 2019. In 2019, he secured a comfortable victory with a margin of more than 76,000 votes, establishing himself as one of the Congress’s strongest leaders in Punjab at the time. Even after switching to the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Bittu remained highly competitive. Contesting against Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, he lost by only around 21,000 votes despite the BJP fighting alone and lacking a deep organisational structure across much of Punjab. He still secured over three lakh votes in the constituency. For the BJP leadership, that result demonstrated that Bittu’s personal appeal survived his party switch. A Political Experiment The BJP’s decision to induct Bittu into the Union Council of Ministers despite his electoral defeat was widely viewed as a strategic investment in Punjab. The message was clear: the party sees him as one of its key Sikh faces in the state. His profile offers multiple advantages. As the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Bittu carries political legacy value. As a three-time MP, he possesses electoral experience.
As a Jat Sikh leader, he gives the BJP access to a social constituency where the party has historically struggled. If he enters the Assembly fray from Ludhiana in 2027 and performs well, the BJP could project him as proof that it can compete independently in Punjab without relying on regional allies. Why Ludhiana Could Shape BJP’s Statewide Narrative The BJP’s challenge in Punjab is not merely winning seats; it is convincing voters that it can become a serious contender for power. Ludhiana provides an opportunity to build that narrative. During the 2024 Lok Sabha election, BJP performed strongly in several urban segments of the parliamentary constituency, highlighting the party’s growing footprint in the city even though it ultimately lost the seat. If Bittu can convert that urban support into Assembly-level victories, Ludhiana could emerge as a model for BJP expansion across other urban centres such as Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala and Bathinda. The party’s calculation appears straightforward: first consolidate urban Punjab, then gradually expand into rural regions through a combination of local leadership and organisational growth. The Challenges Ahead However, the road is far from easy. AAP remains the ruling party and has shown continuing strength in parts of Ludhiana’s rural belt. Congress retains significant influence in the district and still demonstrated its ability to win the parliamentary seat in 2024. Meanwhile, the Akali Dal continues to retain pockets of traditional support. Bittu himself must also prove that his personal vote base can be translated into Assembly-level victories under the BJP banner rather than the Congress symbol under which he built most of his career.
Bittu’s statement about returning to Punjab politics may have sounded like a personal preference. In reality, it could signal something much larger. For the BJP, the 2027 election is likely to be its first full-scale attempt to emerge as an independent pole in Punjab politics. If that strategy succeeds, the journey may well begin in Ludhiana – the city where Ravneet Singh Bittu built his political identity and where the BJP hopes to build its future. Whether Ludhiana becomes merely Bittu’s comeback stage or the BJP’s launchpad for a broader Punjab breakthrough could be one of the defining political stories of the 2027 election.
