Rapid Read Representative image (File Photo/ANI) Swarup Biswas, the brother of former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas and an accused in the vandalism case linked to Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour event at Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake on December 13 last year, was arrested by Kolkata Police on Thursday night. According to sources in the state police, the arrest stems from allegations of extortion involving technicians associated with the Bengali film industry. The action followed a complaint filed by a female make-up artist who is linked to an organisation representing make-up artists working in Bengali film, television and OTT productions in Tollygunge on Kolkata’s southern outskirts.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that Swarup Biswas conspired to prevent her from getting make-up assignments over the last two years. She further claimed that he had threatened her on multiple occasions when his elder brother was serving as sports and power minister in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal Cabinet. The complainant also accused Swarup Biswas of extorting several lakh rupees from her through intimidation and threats. Acting on the complaint, New Alipore Police Station launched an investigation, which eventually led to his arrest on Thursday night. Swarup Biswas had for years served as president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India after the Trinamool Congress came to power in West Bengal. He has previously faced allegations of extorting members of the organisation.
Following his arrest, he is scheduled to be produced before a lower court in Kolkata on Friday. Aroop Biswas, Swarup’s elder brother, represented the Tollygunge Assembly constituency as a Trinamool Congress MLA for four consecutive terms between 2006 and 2026. He also served as the state’s power minister in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet. However, in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, he lost the Tollygunge seat to BJP candidate and actress-turned-politician Papiya Adhikari by a margin of more than 6,000 votes.
