Demographic Changes In West Bengal, Tripura, And Bihar Will Not Be Allowed: Amit Shah Published By, Last Updated: June 05, 2026, 15:10 IST Amit Shah said the government is working to plug all gaps along India’s international borders and make them more secure. Amit Shah said demographic changes in West Bengal, Tripura, and Bihar will not be allowed. (X/PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asserted that the Centre will not allow any demographic changes in West Bengal, Tripura and Bihar, as he outlined the government’s plans to strengthen border security through a forthcoming “smart border" project. Speaking to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura, Shah said the government is working to plug all gaps along India’s international borders and make them more secure. “Demographic changes in West Bengal, Tripura and Bihar will not be tolerated… The Centre is making all efforts to bridge the gaps in guarding international borders," the home minister said.
Shah announced that the much-discussed “smart border" initiative has entered its final stage. “The concept of ‘smart border’ will be implemented in seven to eight places of the country as a pilot project. I request the Union home secretary and the director general of the BSF to visit border areas, and hold talks," he added. He said the new security grid will integrate cutting-edge technology with the efforts of local administrations and border forces. “Every border has its own challenges, from human trafficking to arms smuggling to drug supply, but the BSF jawans do their best to face these challenges," Shah noted. Linking border security to the government’s long-term development vision, Shah said, “To make India a ‘viksit’ (developed) nation by 2047, we have to stop the entry of fake notes, human trafficking and drugs smuggling from across the borders." Shah had earlier, in May, said that the government will launch a technology-enabled “smart border" project by next year to make the 6,000-km fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh impenetrable, and to foil any “conspiracy" to alter the country’s demography.
“The government of India has decided that not only will we stop infiltration, but we will find each and every infiltrator and send them out of the country," he had said. Addressing the annual Rustamji Memorial lecture hosted by the BSF in New Delhi on May 22, Shah had also assured the force that the smart border project would be rolled out within the 60th year of the BSF’s raising. “We will make the Bangladesh and Pakistan borders impenetrable through major technical assistance," he had said.
