(MEA) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said India and Bangladesh have an established mechanism for addressing issues related to illegal immigration and confirmed that deportation procedures are being carried out through this bilateral framework. Responding to questions during the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi has repeatedly raised concerns with Dhaka regarding the presence of illegal Bangladeshi nationals in India and has sought cooperation in facilitating their return.
Jaiswal stressed that the issue of illegal immigration remains a matter of national security and sovereignty for India, adding that the government is committed to taking action against individuals residing in the country without valid documentation. His remarks came amid ongoing efforts by authorities across several states to identify and deport illegal immigrants. Recent verification drives have led to the detention of hundreds of suspected Bangladeshi nationals, with governments citing concerns related to border security and unlawful residency. The MEA spokesperson noted that India and Bangladesh maintain regular communication through established diplomatic and administrative channels to verify the nationality of individuals and facilitate their repatriation. “India and Bangladesh have a bilateral mechanism in place to address issues related to illegal immigration.
The matter is handled through discussions and cooperation between the two sides," Jaiswal said. He reiterated that New Delhi expects all foreign nationals residing in India to possess valid travel and residency documents and comply with Indian laws. The comments come at a time when several states, including Gujarat and Assam, have intensified action against suspected illegal migrants. Authorities have also launched investigations into individuals and organisations accused of facilitating illegal entry, employment or accommodation for undocumented foreigners. India shares a 4,096-kilometre border with Bangladesh, one of the longest international borders in the world. The issue of illegal migration has remained a recurring point of discussion between the two neighbours for decades. Jaiswal said India remains committed to working with Bangladesh through legal and diplomatic channels to address such issues while ensuring that due process is followed in all cases.
