(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth approximately Rs 1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and NIBE Private Limited for the procurement of Loiter Munition Systems for the Indian Army.The contracts, which also cover munitions and other accessories, were signed in New Delhi on August 14, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.According to the Ministry of Defence, the Loiter Munition System is a critical capability designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army's Artillery Regiments.The system is expected to strengthen the capabilities of artillery units and contribute to the Army's overall operational preparedness.The procurement includes the Loiter Munition Systems along with the required munitions and other accessories.The Ministry of Defence said the acquisition is being undertaken under the Buy (Indian) category through the Fast Track Procedure (FTP).The procurement is expected to provide a boost to India's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem by increasing demand for indigenously produced defence equipment.The contracts with TASL and NIBE are part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen India's defence industrial base and reduce dependence on imports.The Ministry of Defence described the procurement as an important step towards modernising and strengthening India's defence industry.The acquisition is expected to bolster the manufacturing capabilities of Indian defence companies while supporting the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.The Ministry said the procurement will be a significant step towards modernising and empowering Indian defence industries and strengthening India's self-reliance in the defence sector.
